Skilljar News & Updates

Each quarter, Skilljar’s executive team recognizes one Skillet who has gone above and beyond in demonstrating one of our core values. We’re thrilled to announce this quarter’s Core Value Award winner: Jessica Poe for demonstrating Ownership and Get Stuff Done! Congratulations, Jessica!

We took a few minutes to sit down with Jessica for a quick Q&A to learn more about her time at Skilljar, what she loves about being a Software Engineer, and a few fun facts!

Skilljar Core Values Award Jessica Poe

Q: You’ve been with Skilljar for just over a year now, joining just as we went fully remote congrats! What drew you to Skilljar initially, and do you have a favorite Skilljar memory from the past year you can share?

There were a multitude of things that drew me to Skilljar. My interest was initially piqued after exploring the product and becoming excited about its depth and versatility. As I continued onward with my exploration into the company, I was further blown away by our diverse leadership with our mission and core values. I feel proud to be a part of it.

One of my favorite memories was celebrating a revenue milestone as a company. While it was a gathering via Zoom, it felt like we were all together listening and sharing stories of Skilljar’s beginnings and|the accomplishments we made as a team.

Q: You’re on the Engineering team. Explain to me like I’m five – what does an Engineer do at Skilljar? What makes you excited in your day-to-day role?

As a Software Engineer at Skilljar, I contribute to the design and development of new products, features, and services, as well as maintain and improve existing features.

I feel very fortunate to work at a company where I get to solve fun and challenging problems that have a direct impact on our product each and every day.

Q: Almost a year ago, Skilljar went fully remote. What’s been your favorite WFH hack over the past year? Have you picked up any new hobbies?

This actually makes me laugh when I think about it but my favorite WFH hack was implementing a new routine for my cats so I can have quiet, focused mornings. I found a formula that works well for us: first, we play, then we eat, and finally, I open their window where they perch and it puts them right to sleep.

I picked up quite a few home improvement skills that have turned into a hobby for me. It’s been great to spend time learning about electricity, how to use power tools, installing floors, and so much more!

Q: Given that Skilljar is a learning platform, it’s no surprise that a lot of Skillets enjoy learning new things. If you could become an expert in something overnight, what would it be?

This is such a tough question as it’s hard to choose just one. I’ve always been fascinated with space and understanding how the universe works so becoming an expert in astrophysics would be on the top of my list.  I’d also love to be a polyglot. I think that language can open doors to the world and I would greatly benefit from having a better understanding of and experiencing different cultures.

Q: Final question – What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend for fun (pre-pandemic or currently)?

Now that I’m fully vaccinated, I’m starting to get back into the swing of having a social life. On the weekends, you’ll find me exploring and camping in the Pacific Northwest with friends.

Thank you, Jessica! Congratulations on being this quarter’s Core Value Award recipient!
